Vidyarambha (literally “beginning of education”) is a Hindu ritual that marks the beginning of a child’s formal education. Traditionally performed when the child is around 2 to 5 years old, this Samskara is one of the 16 Hindu Sanskars (rites of passage) and is deeply rooted in the Indian tradition of revering knowledge and the Goddess Saraswati.

1.Significance of vidyarambha Samskar 

  • Spiritual Preparation: It instills the sanctity and importance of learning and knowledge.
  • Cultural Foundation: Introduces the child to spiritual, moral, and social responsibilities.
  • Mental Readiness: Symbolizes the child’s readiness for structured learning.
  • The child writes the first letter or syllable, often “Om” or “Sri” or the alphabet of their native language, under the guidance of a guru or elder.

2.Rituals and Procedures

  •  Choosing the Date (Muhurta)
  • Performed on auspicious days such as Vasant Panchami, Vijayadashami (Dussehra), Akshaya Tritiya, or Navaratri.
  • Astrologers are often consulted to choose a favorable time.
  • Preparations
  • Clean and decorate the house or visit a temple.
  • Prepare a worship area with an image or idol of Goddess Saraswati.
  • Gather puja items: flowers, fruits, rice, turmeric, sandalwood paste, lamp, incense, betel leaves, books, slate and chalk or rice tray.

3. Vidyarambham Pooja

  • Ganapati Puja: To remove obstacles.
  • Saraswati Puja: Invoke the Goddess of Learning.
  • Lighting the Lamp: Symbol of wisdom and knowledge.
  • Offering: Naivedyam (offerings) like fruits, sweets, and payasam.
  • Initiation:The child is seated on the lap of the guru, priest, or father.
  • Using a gold ring, chalk, or a stylus dipped in turmeric or sandalwood paste, the guru or elder helps the child write:
  • “ॐ” or
  • “अ” or
  • “श्री” or first letter of the alphabet on a plate of rice or slate.

1. Saraswati Vandana:

या कुन्देन्दुतुषारहारधवला या शुभ्रवस्त्रावृता।

या वीणावरदण्डमण्डितकरा या श्वेतपद्मासना॥

या ब्रह्माच्युतशंकरप्रभृतिभिर्देवैः सदा वन्दिता।

सा मां पातु सरस्वती भगवती निःशेषजाड्यापहा॥

2.Vidyarambham Mantra:

विघ्नेश्वराय वरदाय सुरप्रियाय

लम्बोदराय सकलाय जगद्धिताय।

नागाननाय श्रुतियज्ञविभूषिताय

गौरीसुताय गणनाथ नमो नमस्ते॥
